 History

​​​​​​​​​The Saudi Post, during its long history, has gone through three main stages: pre-foundation of the Kingdom, foundation of the Kingdom by His Majesty the late King (founder) Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud and the modernization and development stage.​


​Before King Abdul Aziz entered Riyadh in 1319H, some shop owners used to volunteer to do the mail service in the Justice (Safat) square by putting sacks of white cloth inscribed with the name of the city or village. The sender would put the letter inside the specified sack where it would be sent with travelers using animals. The incoming mail used to be placed inside special places in the shops to be collected by its owner.​

    • First Stage:
    • In Makkah and Jeddah, the mail was carried on animal back in a journey that used to last for 14 hours, and the post office was made up of a chief, his assistant, stamp salesman and a registered and regular mail officer.

The Kingdom is considered the second Arab state to issue regular and memorial stamps.

  • 1334
    • The first Saudi stamp was issued in 1334H.

Saudi Post joi​​ning the Universal Postal Union 

  • 1348
    • Saudi Post joined the Universal Postal Union in 1348H

Establishing ​the Directorate of Postal Works

  • 1354
    • The Directorate of Postal Works was established in 1354H.

The Post, Telephone and Telegraph Authority were moved to the Ministry of Communications under the name of the Communications Deputy Ministry for Wireless and Postal Affairs.

  • 1373
    • The Post, Telephone and Telegraph Authority ran the postal activities until the year 1373H. These activities were then moved to the Ministry of Communications under the name of the Communications Deputy Ministry for Wireless and Postal Affairs.

The postal system quickly developed to cover different quality and quantities.

  • 1390
    • Since 1390H, and with the beginning of the five-year development plan, The postal system quickly developed to cover different quality and quantities.
  • 1392
    • The first separate budget for the Post was released in Rajab 1392H following the establishment of the General Post Directorate.
  • 1395
    • The Ministry of Post, Telephone and Telegraph was established pursuant to the royal decree no. 236/A on 8/10/1395H.

Express Mail Service (EMS) was established 

  • 1404
    • The General Directorate of Express Mail Service (EMS) was established on 8/10/1404H.

​Third Stage: Modernization & Development

  • 1423
    • Within developmental transitions experienced by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Council of Ministers issued its decision dated 29/03/1423 AH corresponding to 10/6/2002 converting the General Directorate of Post to a public firm operating.
  • 1426
    • A large scale phase was implemented in the Saudi Post Corporation, the key features of that phase were represented in the creation of new departments.
